Route Description for Summit Creek Hike

Meander through meadows blossoming with wildflowers, stroll through corridors of alpine fir and trace the banks of snowmelt creeks all while enjoying mesmerizing mountain views on the Summit Creek Trail. This scenic expedition is not for the faint of heart, but those who conquer this trek are rewarded with unrivaled views. Wear a comfy pair of footwear and when exploring in the shoulder seasons, consider packing a pair of microspikes as sections of the route will likely be dusted in snow. As this lovely path is mostly exposed it is also wise to dress in layers as insurance against changing conditions and to keep an eye on the skies—being mindful of afternoon altitude storms. Whatever you do—don’t forget your camera; the scenery is quite photogenic.

Setting out from the Trail Creek Summit Trailhead, the Summit Creek Trail travels southeastward into the mountain-bound valley, traveling through communities of wildflowers and pine trees. Hugging the curves of Summit Creek, trekkers will hike to the soundtrack of gurgling water and the wind whistling through the trees. The further into the wilderness you get, the more likely you are to come across mountain goats and deer. The consistent climb will tire you but don’t get discouraged; soon, you will top a ridge overlooking the Pioneer Mountains before plunging down into Kane Canyon.

Admire the mountainous landscape and the craggy ridges that bound the meadow-laden canyon before beginning your return. When you are ready to head back, simply retrace your footing along the route all the way back to the trailhead.
