Route Description for Animas Mountain Trail

Situated close to the city of Durango, the Animas Mountain Trail is perfectly suited for those times when you are looking for a fun adventure but don’t want to stray too far from town. Beautifully scenic views and mildly challenging terrain await on this great outdoor excursion.

Setting out from the trailhead, you will make your way to the northwest through the tree cover and immediately be met with a series of switchbacks leading uphill. From here, you will turn to the northeast and hike along the edge of the cliffside, climbing further uphill until you reach the summit viewpoint.

After taking in the fantastic views across the Animas River Valley, you will turn to the southwest and begin making your way back down the mountain. Eventually, the trail will bend more directly to the south, asd it brings you back to the trailhead where you started your adventure in Durango.
