    The Big Meadows Reservoir Trail is an amazing family-friendly hiking route in Colorado that will lead you through some easy-going terrain along the shores of a beautiful lake. While out hiking the trail, you will pass through stretches of open and forested terrain, as you enjoy scenic views across the surface of Big Meadows Reservoir and the surrounding mountains. This is a great hike to pair with a fun weekend of camping at the nearby Big Meadows Campground.

    Route Description for Big Meadows Reservoir Trail

    Whether you are looking for a simple day hike with easy terrain or are hoping to spend a few days camping out by the lake, the Big Meadows Reservoir Trail is a great option to explore if you find yourself in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado.

    Setting out from the trailhead next to the campground, you will head to the southwest through the meadow, where you will eventually come to the edge of the forest where it meets the shores of the Big Meadows Reservoir.

    From here, you will make your way around the water’s edge in a clockwise direction, while enjoying the beautifully scenic views across the water. After reaching the southwest corner of the lake and crossing over the South Fork of the Rio Grande, you will make your way around the forested western shore of the lake, before arriving back at the trailhead.

    The Big Meadows Reservoir Trailhead can be found at the parking lot for the Big Meadows Campground along Forest Service Road 410.
