With the option to backcountry camp along the trail, this trek presents the ideal opportunity to disconnect from the real world and reconnect with nature. Don’t forget to leave a car or arrange for pickup at the Twin Lakes!

    Embark on your adventure along the Colorado Trail: Mount Elbert Trailhead to Twin Lakes from the trailhead off Halfmoon Road. From here, track the Colorado Trail Segment 11 south and immediately climb into the woodlands. Intersecting with several snowmelt creeks, you will be surrounded by a sea of golden aspens as you wander through the tree breaks and exposed terrain to experience impressive views of Mount Elbert looming above in the west.

    Revel in the grandeur of the peak and continue your trek to the Twin Lakes. As you near the end of your adventure, there will be several merging and intersecting paths; ignore these and continue along the Colorado Trail Segment 11. Eventually, you will cross State Highway 82 before meeting the trail’s end along the shores of the Twin Lakes.
