Route Description for Fancy Pass Trail

The Fancy Pass Trail lives up to its name—fancy. This exciting expedition up to the mountain pass exhibits views of the mountains, lush woodlands, and luxuriant alpine meadowlands of the surrounding landscape. With an alpine lake conveniently located just before the final push to summit the pass, you can rehydrate and rejuvenate your tired feet in the chilly waters before the climb. Note that the road to the trailhead is subject to seasonal closure in the winter months! Embark on your adventure along the Fancy Pass Trail from the trailhead. From here, follow the Fancy Pass Trail northwest through the woodlands. The shaded path will follow the curves of the gurgling Fancy Creek, which will provide a calming ambiance for your trek. Following the forested route, you will eventually come to an intersection and keep left to be guided to the shores of Fancy Lake, which has a stunning emerald hue. Revel in the postcard-worthy alpine views from the lake before continuing your climb towards the pass. Ascent the vertiginous path up to the summit of the ridge. From the exposed terrain of Fancy Pass, you will be rewarded with sweeping views of the Sawatch Mountain Range’s snow-dusted peaks that flank the verdant woodlands below. Admire the scenery and, when you are ready, retrace your footing along the path back to the trailhead.
