Mount Massive lives up to its name, that is for sure. Explore the Mount Massive Southwest Slopes Hike up to the summit of Colorado’s second-highest peak. This monstrosity of a mountain reveals some of the best alpine views in our opinion, and we’re sure you’ll agree!

Route Description for Mount Massive Southwest Slopes Hike

The Mount Massive Southwest Slopes Hike is an incredible adventure up to the summit of the famous Colorado 14er. Climbing 1,188 m in just 11.3 km, it is extremely important that you are acclimated to the area’s elevation before your trek to mitigate the chances of altitude sickness. Furthermore, the vertiginous and technical terrain demands an experienced and prepared adventurer. Make sure you have a pair of microspikes and wear plenty of layers as insurance against chilly conditions at the peak. Additionally, try to reach the summit before noon to avoid getting caught in an afternoon storm.

Departing from the trailhead of County Road 11, take the Mount Massive Southwest Slopes Trail northwest along Halfmoon Creek. You will travel along the curves of the stream until you encounter an intersection. Here, you will veer to the right and be confronted with the most technical section of the expedition. Carefully navigate the steep switchbacks through the alpine tundra up the slope of the mountain, making sure to take your time and catch your breath along the way.

After a seemingly never-ending ascent up the technical and steep terrain, you will eventually summit Mount Massive. From here, you will be rejuvenated by the 360-degree panoramic views of the Sawatch Mountain Range’s peaks. After you are finished reveling in the scenery, retrace your footing along the path all the way back to the trailhead.
