Route Description for Big Stump Grove via Azalea Campground Hike

This rustic adventure boasts a tranquil experience before entering the busy grove—which is a plus in our books! Put your navigational skills to the test as you explore the unmarked trails that run through the backcountry and keep an eye out for wildlife along the way. Though not necessary, we encourage you to download the trail GPS prior to your departure. Note there are not many water sources along the path, so be sure to bring plenty of water in your backpack! Note entrance to the park costs $35USD per vehicle or $20USD per person for pedestrians or cyclists.

Setting out from the South Boundary Trailhead off the Azalea Campground, the Big Stump Grove via Azalea Campground travels southwardly through the mixed-coniferous forest and down to Viola Falls. Admire the scene of the charming cascade, then continue hiking south along the South Boundary Trail. This route will gently undulate through the woodlands, eventually delivering you to an intersection with the Big Stump Trail. Keep right here and venture the Big Stump Trail over a seasonal creek and into Hitchcock Meadow.

Take a moment to appreciate the beauty of the vibrant meadow, then continue along the trail to Big Stump. The grandeur of the Mark Twain Stump will render you speechless! Dance atop the solid wood dancefloor, then return to the trailhead the way you came.
