Route Description for Big Stump Trail

The Big Stump Trail is a wonderful hike in the Kings Canyon National Park that offers the opportunity to hike amongst some of the world’s tallest trees—not to mention the opportunity to dance atop one of their stumps! Wander through sequoias and read the interpretive signs that detail the history and ecology of the area. Compared to most groves in the area, this route sees less traffic, though you can expect to share the path during the rush hours.

Embark on your adventure along the Big Stump Trail from the trailhead off the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway. Setting out from here, you will be guided southeastward to a junction; keep left here. Hike this path around the luxuriant Big Stump Meadow before arriving at the famous Mark Twain Stump. Take the time to read the fallen tree's history, then continue along the Big Stump Trail, crossing over the Scenic Byway.

Follow the route on the other side of the road, traveling past sequoias and ponderosa pines. At the trail’s end, you will have to cross back over the Byway back to the trailhead, marking the end of your exciting excursion.
