Route Description for Bullfrog Lake Hike
Those seeking a challenging day-hike or epic overnight expedition should explore the Bullfrog Lake Hike. Beckoning experienced hikers and intrepid spirits, this route will put your stamina to the test as you climb into the alpine terrain. The high-altitude area sees extreme weather conditions, so dress in layers and keep an eye on the skies—retreat beneath the treeline if you anticipate a storm! Note entrance to the park costs $35USD per vehicle or $20USD per person for pedestrians or cyclists.
Embark on your adventure along the Bullfrog Lake Trail from the Onion Valley Trailhead. Setting out from here, you will be guided along the Kearsarge Pass Trail through the mixed conifer woodlands adorned with granite outcrops. Demanding the navigation of several switchbacks, you will pass Gilbert Lake, Flower Lake, Heart Lake, and Big Pothole Lake. From here, you will summit the Kearsarge Pass beneath Mount Gould looming above.
From here, the route will gently descend into the basin decorated with the Kearsarge Lakes before ultimately reaching Bullfrog Lake. Admire the scene of the crystalline lake framed by the rugged ridges anchored by Mount Rixford. Enjoy the alpine terrain, then retrace your footing back to the trailhead along the path.
