    Route Description for Herring Creek and Waterhouse Lake Hike

    Those seeking a longer, more demanding day hike will enjoy this adventure. This immersive trail exhibits the diversity of the area’s flora and fauna, leading you through a variety of topographies. Stimulating and impressively scenic along the way—there is no better hike in the Stanislaus National Forest. Boasting a sequestered experience, those venturing this route need to be mindful of wildlife! Traveling through bear country, many explorers should opt to carry a bear bell. Note much of the path is exposed, so wear sun protection and dress accordingly.

    Setting out from the trailhead, the Herring Creek and Waterhouse Lake Hike follows Forest Route 4N12 northeast. As you hike this route, you will be bounded by an impressive cliffside on your left. Not long after your departure will you reach an intersection at the Herring Creek Campground. Here, veer right, meandering through the campground and over Herring Creek. Gradually climbing this winding path will guide you east through mixed woodlands and meadows adorned with granite outcrops. At the next junction, you reach, keep right, and continue hiking south.

    Here the path will plateau before dropping into a canyon before redirecting you east to Waterhouse Lake. Marvel in the beauty of the shimmering alpine lake hemmed by looming granite bluffs. Before you leave, rejuvenate your tired feet in the chilly alpine waters. When you are set, head back along the route the way you came.
