Route Description for Sourgrass 4×4 Trail
Explore the lush forestlands and revel in the sights of charming cascades surging along the North Fork Stanislaus River. This awesome route boasts an exciting adventure for off-roaders and hikers alike to enjoy in the summer months. It is important to be mindful of speedy passers-by if you are hiking and note this may not be the most tranquil experience. Though busy and loud, the stunning scenery makes up for it—so make sure you bring the camera as the scenes are picture-perfect.
Setting out from the trailhead off Forest Road 5N02, the Sourgrass 4x4 Trail follows the Rattlesnake Creek Road northwest. As you wander this undulating route through the forestlands you may have to maneuver over the giant granite boulders that adorn the landscape and the huge mud puddles created by the off-roading vehicles. Hiking further into the wilderness, you will be rewarded with views of the running river and several charming cascades. Let the sounds of the gurgling water distract you from the sounds of the off-roaders, and eventually, you will reach the trail’s end.
From here, simply retrace your footing along the path all the way back to the trailhead.
