Route Description for Arizona Trail to North Happy Camp Road Loop
The Arizona Trail to North Happy Camp Road Loop is a lesser-traveled adventure in the Tonto National Forest with interesting scenery and lots of wildlife to spot. You’ll hike a loop section through the desert hills followed by an out and back section through a red rock canyon. Birders will love this hike.
The trailhead requires a very capable vehicle to reach due to the poor condition of the road. We also highly advise bringing a downloaded GPS track as you may not have cell service out here. Avoid this hike in the heat of summer and bring lots of water.
From the trailhead, head out onto the loop portion of the hike. Take the road to the top of the lop, where you pick up the Arizona Trail. Take care to check your map coming out of washes as the route can be lost on the other side. Back at the trailhead, hike out into the canyon, following the wash. There are impressive trees and cacti here. At the end of the canyon trail, turn back and retrace your steps to the trailhead.
