Route Description for Finger Rock Short Route

The Finger Rock Short Route is the quickest route to a viewpoint of the Finger Rock, a unique formation in the desert that resembles a fist with an outstretched finger. This route is moderately difficult, but it should be suitable for strong beginners and active families.

As with all hikes in the Tucson area, avoid this trail in the summertime and bring plenty of water when you visit. Note that this route is closed annually for bighorn sheep lambing season, normally between January 1st and April 30th each year.

From the trailhead, you’ll hike north on Finger Rock Trail #42. The route travels parallel to a wash as you pass the last stretches of the neighborhood to your left before entering the canyon. In the canyon, you’ll follow the canyon floor, crossing over the creek bed to then climb up the east canyon wall. The trail terminates here where you can see the rock. There’s a path that continues on if you want to hike further, but otherwise, you’ll retrace your steps from this point.
