Butterfly Lake to Castle Lake Trail

The Butterfly Lake to Castle Lake Trail is a short and sweet hike east of Park City. This trail is rugged and can be tricky to navigate as it leads you to a beautiful, secluded lake in the Utah wilderness. Castle Lake itself is a great spot to spend the day fishing, swimming, and bird watching in the western Uintas.

Route Description for Butterfly Lake to Castle Lake Trail
The hike from Butterfly Lake to Castle Lake is an adventurous little trail in the western Uintas. This trail does not get a lot of traffic and can therefore be tricky to navigate. We suggest downloading a map and/or bringing a GPS along on this hike, especially if you are not experienced with route-finding. If you are up for a little adventure, the trail from Butterfly Lake will lead you away from the crowds to a secluded slice of alpine paradise. Castle Lake is a great spot to enjoy the beauty and peace of the Utah wilderness with loved ones, on your own, or with your favorite four-legged friend.
From Butterfly Lake, follow the south shore of the lake and look for a trail heading westward. Make your way along this trail, and keep an eye out for cairns that will lead you west to Castle Lake.
Enjoy your time at Castle Lake, and, when you are ready, simply retrace your steps back to Butterfly Lake, where you began.
Getting to the Butterfly Lake to Castle Lake Trail Trailhead
From Kamas, Utah, head east on highway 150 for 54.7 km then park at Butterfly Lake on the west side of the highway.
