Route Description for Tuolumne Grove Trail

Tuolumne Grove is a quieter alternative to Mariposa Grove, and this hike is an incredibly scenic adventure that exhibits the beauty and intricacies of the sequoia tree. Though not as busy as Mariposa Grove, this forest still draws plenty of eager explorers, so we suggest heading out early to secure a parking spot. Additionally, pets are allowed on the paved portions of the trail, but not on the side routes. Note: Yosemite National Park charges an entrance fee; refer to the NPS website for more information.

Incredibly scenic and open year-round, the Tuolumne Grove Trail is an adventurer’s oasis. Whether you choose to walk, run, cross country ski, or snowshoe, the ways to experience this magical grove are countless. Immerse yourself in the forest of sugar pines, white firs, and ancient sequoias, as you wander through the gigantic trees and admire their magnificence. Be sure to take the time to read the interpretive signs that line the path, as they depict the area’s history and ecology! We can almost certainly guarantee that adults and children alike will enjoy the epic excursion through Tuolumne Grove!

Embark on your adventure along the Tuolumne Grove Trail from the Old Big Oak Flat Road in Tuolumne Grove. From here, you will begin your adventure by tracking northeast through a forest of mixed pines and white firs. Soon after departing from the trailhead, the path will begin to descend further into the woodlands. Mind your footing as you gradually climb down and consider bringing trekking poles if you have bad joints! Eventually, you will navigate a switchback into the sequoia grove.

When you reach a junction, keep right and you will be guided to the Dead Giant Tunnel Tree. Admire the grandeur of the looming sequoia before hiking through the base of the tree. As you wander you will reach an overlook of the grove that reveals awesome views of the ancient trees. At this intersection, keep left to hike clockwise past an area of tree burn and the interpretive signs depicting the ecology of the environment. Soon you will be redirected to the viewpoint, where you will hike south along the rightmost trail to reconnect with the route that led you into the grove. Head south to retrace your steps up to the Old Big Oak Flat Road and back to the trailhead, marking the end of your adventure.
