Itinerary for 7-Day Chiemgau Cycling Tour
Arrival at the Chiemsee
After arriving at the shores of the Chiemsee, you will attend a welcome meeting and rental bike fitting, before enjoying free time for the evening. This is a nice time to take a stroll along the lakeside.
Cross the Austrian Border to Visit the Walchsee
Today the mountains will get higher and higher, but the cycling route continues to be nearly flat as you approach them. You will cycle through Aschau with its historic palace, which can be seen from far away lying at the foot of the Chiemau mountains, and past the Kampenwand on the Priental cycle path towards Tyrol. In Austria, you can take a break at idyllic Lake Walchsee, before once again crossing the German-Austrian border to reach the spa town of Reit im Winkl with its typical Bavarian alpine atmosphere.
Visit the Famous Spa Town of Bad Reichenhall
Day 3 of the cycling tour will take you along the German Alpine Road along a narrow route through the mountains. On Mozart Cycle Path you will pass Lake Weitsee and with a little luck you can see famous biathlon athletes in Ruhpolding during their summer training.
Afterwards, you will have time to enjoy a lunch break in Inzell, another famous spa town, before you continue cycling along the River Saalach to the famous spa town Bad Reichenhall. Here you can experience the thermal baths or take a ride in the oldest cable car in the world to the Predigtstuhl, 1.600m above sea level.
Explore Berchtesgaden and the Obersalzberg
Today will be a short stage with plenty of time to enjoy the fantastic views on Watzmann Mountain as you make your way to Berchtesgaden. The Obersalzberg or famous Kehlsteinhaus is definitely worth a visit. Alternatively, you can cycle a couple of kilometres further along the Königssee Ache to reach the famous Lake Königssee.
Visit Mozart’s Hometown of Salzburg
Continuing along the Königssee Ache, you will pass the Bavarian-Austrian border once again and bike further on to reach Salzburg with its many cultural attractions. After an extensive visit of Salzburg you will enjoy a leisurely cycle on the Tauern Cycle Path, following the River Salzach until you reach charming Laufen and Oberndorf with its famous “Silent Night Chapel“. Here, you can enjoy a nice stroll in the evening at the riverside to end your day.
Return to the Chiemsee
The final stage of the cycle tour will lead you through small villages and farms to Lake Waginger See and further along the River Traun to Traunstein, which is famous for its small Hofbrauhaus. As you make your way back to the lakeside of Chiemsee, you will enjoy views of the romantic Lake Tüttensee. To wrap up the cycling portion of the tour, you will follow the shoreline of the Chiemsee back to the starting point of your tour.
