10-Day Camino de Santiago in Luxury
It was an exhiliarating and awesome experience that exceeded all my expectations!
Welcome to Bolivia! You’ll be warmly received at the airport and taken to your hotel. Toss your bags down and head out towards Moon Valley. This unique clay labyrinth is nature’s artwork, filled with stalagmites. Then, head back into the city for dinner.
Begin the day by linking up with your guide at the hotel, where you’ll set off for the historic centre of La Paz. See the red cable car? That’s your ride for the day. After you fly around above the city, stop in at different local markets for some souvenirs or snacks. Highlights include the countless varieties of potato dishes and the fresh fish markets, which are carefully prepared each morning as early as 3:30 am. Take a breather for lunch at Manq’s, a true Bolivian experience. Then, you’ll spend the afternoon walking through the city, including the colonial distinct, the main square, and the many great art galleries.
Get the morning started with a transfer to Chiquinapi, right on the shore of Lake Titicaca. Here, you’ll stop into the local monastery, which is situated in the gorgeous Andean countryside. Enjoy lunch here before setting off for the island of Sunata. Here, explore to your heart’s content before beginning a relaxed hike along the shore of the lake. After you get back to the monastery, you’re free to either continue hiking at your leisure or settle in on the sand to relax before dinner onsite.
Today is one of the highlights of the trip! Don your bathing suit and set off for a catamaran tour of Lake Titicaca. You can see the glaciers and peaks of the Cordillera Real in the distance, which is a perfect backdrop. After your sailing, you’ll return to the monastery and help prepare lunch. Afterwards, you’ll set off to meet the local Tuni people and learn about their life here in the mountains. They’ll show you how to prepare a local Andean dinner, and then it’s lights out.
The next part of your Andean adventure is all about hiking! Today, you’ll get high into the stellar mountains in the area. You’ll begin by heading west along Laguna Tuni, heading up to a beautiful valley that sits at the base of Condoriri. It’s simply incredible up here- you have to see it to believe it. Continue climbing along the “Head of the Condor”, which has a large glacier to admire. The trail gets a little tougher as you head up Col Austria, where elevation starts to exceed 5300m. Don’t worry, it’s well worth the burn! You’ll feel like you’re atop the entire mountain range up here. Then, head back down to Tuni and rest your legs while you enjoy some music and dinner.
Little tired after yesterday’s excitement? Start the morning slowly with Andean donuts and api (purple corn juice), and then you’re free to relax around the community. Hang out with the llamas, prepare lunch, and just enjoy the day before an evening departure to La Paz.
Begin the morning with a quick flight to Uyuni, where you’ll be picked up by a local guide and taken to the Lipez region. There’s a fascinating train cemetery on the way, which you’re welcome to stop in at. Likewise, the church in San Cristobal is a worthwhile pit stop- it was painstakingly rebuilt brick by brick after being relocated due to mining. Take another break at the amazing Valley of Rocks, which is full of otherworldly rock formations several metres high. Finally, take a photo op at a panoramic canyon lookout before settling into Villamar in the late afternoon.
Today, your first adventure takes you to the hot springs near Polques. They’re nature’s hot tubs, so take a swim and admire the Chalviri Lagoon in the distance. When you’re back on the road, you’ll approach the border with Chile where the “Dali Desert” awaits. The landscapes here are unlike anywhere else! Ochre-coloured ground and isolated rocks make it feel like a drive on Mars. Finally, you’ll arrive at the Green Lagoon, which is deep emerald in colour and sits right at the base of the Licancabur volcano. It’s a special sight to behold! Keep heading towards the Red Lagoon, which is full of pink flamingoes. You’ll be spending the night out here in the refuge, so you’ve got plenty of time to admire the birds and to explore the nearby Siloli Desert, which is full of unique rock formations.
After breakfast, it’s time to take a trip down the “1001 Lagunes” road, where one stunning lagoon after the next hosts flamingoes and reflects colours onto the nearby mountain. You’ll take a break by the Oliague and Tomasamil volcanoes, and then continue on to the village of San Pedro de Quemez for dinner.
Day 10 of your Andean adventure begins with an early morning departure to the Iriputuncu volcano, which is right on the border with Chile. It’s time to climb! You’ll head up the scree to peer over the edge of the crater and into the heart of the volcano, where the fumes from the volcano paint the air with incredible colours. Then, you can climb to a pass above the crater and step into Chile momentarily. Afterwards, head back down and drive back to the village to enjoy dinner.
Today, start off with a trip to the Salar of Uyuni. This is a truly incredible place, with a perfectly smooth, snow-white surface. Take lots of photos! Then, head to the island of Incahuasi, which is home to rare cacti. Finally, you’ll pay a visit to a tiny salt farm in the village of Tahua. The sunset will entertain you on the drive to Jirira, where you’ll spend the night.
In the morning, head to the neighboring village of Coquesa, nestled at the base of the Tuna volcano. Here, you'll explore its pre-Columbian mummies dating back to 700 BC. A leisurely hike takes you to an overlook offering stunning views of the volcano's crater and the Uyuni Salt Flats, followed by a descent along the same path.
The route begins with a journey north toward Sajama Park. The path follows the Salar to Salinas village, then to Quillacas, and onward alongside Lake Poopó to Copacabanita. Passing through Orinoca, the birthplace of Evo Morales, features a museum on the village's heights. Along the way, sand dunes dot the shores of the nearly dry Lake Poopó, and llamas crossing the road create opportunities to pause and admire quinoa fields, which burst into a colorful patchwork during the flowering season. Turning west toward Turco, the journey continues to the Pumiri chullpares (3960m), home to striking rock formations resembling a City of Stones. This area invites exploration, offering hiking trails through the rock maze or bouldering opportunities. Afterward, the journey resumes, reaching Sajama Park in approximately an hour.
The ascent is non-technical (PD/I). From Sajama village, a 4:00 am departure involves a 4WD transfer to the climbing starting point (5600 m / 18,372 ft, 1.5–2 hours drive). A gradual ascent leads to the rim at 5800 m / 19,028 ft, followed by ridge walking to the summit (3–4 hours). Stunning views of Sajama, Parinacota, and Pomerape volcanoes await. The descent takes approximately 2 hours along the same path. The journey concludes with a return to Sajama village and back to La Paz by day's end.
After breakfast, you’ll be transferred to the airport prior to your departure flight. What a trip!
