Coimbra is a vibrant city with a rich history and was once the capital of Portugal. It boasts a beautifully preserved Gothic cathedral and is home to the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest universities in the world, founded in the 13th century. The university was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013, reflecting its historical and cultural significance.
After leaving Coimbra, the route continues along peaceful rivers, following a relatively flat path. You will make your way up to Cioga do Monte, and along the route you’ll encounter remnants of the ancient Roman road. In the evening, you will reach Mealhada, a region renowned for its picturesque vineyards.
Today's route is relatively easy, offering the opportunity to pass through some of the most beautiful vineyards in the region. Along the way, you will reach the town of Avelas de Caminho, a place with deep historical ties to the Camino de Santiago. In the evening, you will arrive in Agueda, a charming town situated along the banks of the River Certima.
Today's route is relatively easy and short, following the old Roman road, the Vía Romana XVI, through eucalyptus and pine forests. Cross a Roman bridge over the River Marnel before arriving in Albergaria-a-Velha.
Leaving Albergaria-a-Velha, the route continues through peaceful forests before reaching the more urban areas in the northern part of the Beira coast. Along the way, pass through the historic town of Oliveira de Azeméis, where a visit to the Main Church of São Miguel is recommended. After leaving Oliveira, the path winds up and down small hills, offering scenic views, until finally arriving at São João da Madeira.
