The First Nations community of Miawpukek became a permanent settlement around 1822, after centuries of serving as a seasonal camp for the Mi’kmaw people, who traditionally moved throughout Canada’s eastern coast.

Since gaining reserve status in 1987, Miawpukek has flourished as a community that blends traditional wisdom with modern life. During our visit, we’ll be warmly welcomed by local leaders and have the opportunity to learn more about this remarkable and culturally rich community.

The rugged southern coast of Newfoundland is dotted with a handful of remote outport communities, each rich in charm and character. In the picturesque fishing village of Francois, experience the warmth and hospitality that define Newfoundland’s coastal life. Colorful homes and seaside views create a postcard-perfect setting.

Spend the day exploring the town’s trails, discovering breathtaking viewpoints and cascading waterfalls. Francois invites you to slow down, connect with locals, and embrace the simple joys of storytelling, friendship, and music.

As evening falls, gather at the community hall for a lively kitchen party filled with food, drinks, and dancing—a true celebration of Newfoundland’s resilient spirit and vibrant culture.

There are countless secluded bays and coves to explore by Zodiac or on foot. The coastline boasts remarkable geology and stunning plant life, while wildlife sightings add to the excitement. Every opportunity will be embraced to discover the beauty and solitude of this remote Arctic shore.

Gros Morne National Park's Tablelands form one of the world’s best examples of exposed mantle, offering an eerie, mineral-rich landscape. Enjoy various walking and hiking options with spectacular views of Bonne Bay. The park’s interpretation centre and the town of Woody Point offer delightful exploration opportunities.

The Red Bay Basque Whaling Station became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2013. Basque whalers operated out of Red Bay harbour in the 1500s, marking North America’s first export industry. Explore the interpretation centre and nearby Saddle Island to learn the history of the whaling industry.

L’Anse aux Meadows, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the only authenticated Norse settlement in North America. The archaeological remains found here date to approximately 1000 CE. A superb interpretation centre and several reconstructed Norse-style sod buildings make this a must-see destination.

The northeast coast of Newfoundland is known for the dozens of picturesque villages that dot its rocky shores, and we’ll find harbour in one of these unique communities. Expect a warm Newfoundland welcome upon arrival. Photographers will be busy capturing the charm of classic island communities and stunning coastlines.

On the final day of the expedition, sail back through the Narrows and into St. John’s harbour. Say your farewells as the expedition team assists with luggage and transportation arrangements.
