Nestled at the foothills of the Prosecco UNESCO World Heritage hills, Conegliano is considered the historic heart of Prosecco. Grapes have been grown here for centuries, but it was in 1868 that Antonio Carpenè founded the Carpenè Malvolti winery and produced the first Prosecco sparkling wine; a few years later, in 1876, Italy’s first School of Oenology was established in Conegliano and remains one of the country’s most prestigious institutions today.

If it’s your first visit to this corner of Italy, consider arriving a few days early to experience magnificent Venice or explore nearby Treviso, an elegant art city that offers similar beauty and atmosphere, but with far fewer crowds!

Enjoy your first day cycling through the lovely rolling hills in the heart of the Prosecco region. Ride along vineyard-covered slopes all the way to historic Serravalle, with plenty of time to explore its cobblestone streets before cycling back to Conegliano. This afternoon, take a leisurely walk through town or head up to the castle for wonderful views over the surrounding villas.

Leaving Conegliano today, you’ll cycle deeper into the Prosecco region, where generations of winemakers have shaped the famous, almost magical landscape. Along the way, stop at the enchanting Croda watermill before continuing to Rolle, one of the area’s most iconic villages, perched above a valley blanketed in vineyards.

Discover the higher vineyards of the Prosecco region on a beautiful loop ride at the foothills of the Alps. As you cycle, sweeping views unfold across the rolling hills on your way to Follina, home to the Cistercian Abbey of Santa Maria. Continue to Cison di Valmarino with its impressive hilltop castle, and ride through the charming village of Valmareno, rich in local character and tradition.

Today, leave the heart of the Prosecco region and cycle west, crossing the Piave River—site of one of the fiercest battles fought by Italian and Allied forces against the Austro-Hungarian Empire during World War I. Riding along the base of the Montello hills, you’ll enter the Asolo area of Prosecco, where varied soils give rise to distinctive expressions of this celebrated wine.

Today you’ll cycle through the westernmost part of the Prosecco region, where the vineyard-covered hills gradually give way to woodlands and farmland. Your destination is Bassano del Grappa, named for nearby Mount Grappa—and lending its name to Italy’s famous spirit.

Set on the banks of the Brenta River, the town is home to two museums dedicated to grappa. Take time to explore the charming historic centre on foot, or settle into a sunny piazza and enjoy the atmosphere like a local.

Leaving Bassano, cross the famous covered wooden bridge on the way to the medieval village of Marostica. Enjoy a cappuccino in the main square before leaving the mountains behind and cycling south to Vicenza—this remarkable Italian art city is home to many masterpieces by the renowned Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio.
