Route Description for Rooney Valley Hike
The Rooney Valley Hike is a family favorite, the easily manageable terrain and stimulating sights will impress the whole crowd. Travel through grassy meadows to the valley lined by the cliffs of Green Mountain. This versatile path can be adventured year-round by hikers, bikers, runners, and snowshoers. If you venture this hike in the summer months, we recommend an early morning excursion to beat the heat. Note that rattlesnakes are abundant in this area, so be mindful of them as you hike.
Embark on your exciting adventure along the Rooney Valley Trail from the trailhead. Though you can complete this hike from either direction, we recommend tracking counterclockwise. From the trailhead, take the rightmost Green Mountain Trail. Shortly after your departure you will encounter an intersection, veer left, and you will be diverted onto the Rooney Valley Trail. Trek west along the Rooney Valley Trail while appreciating the sights of Dinosaur Ridge and the foothills. This path will gradually ascend into the mountain valley.
Soon the route will guide you southwest to another junction. Here, keep left along the Rooney Valley Trail. As you hike back to the trailhead enjoy the views of the mountainous landscape and the unique geological features that line the city’s edge. Eventually, the route will deliver you back to the trailhead, marking the end of your adventure.
