Route Description for Phelps Lake Hike

The Phelps Lake Trail is a beautiful footpath that explores a swathe of wilderness occupied by quaking aspens, lodgepole pines, craggy mountains, and glacial lakes. Those seeking a longer adventure to the popular Phelps Lake Overlook Hike can add on this scenic extension. Note wildlife encounters in the area are frequent, so make sure you or someone in your group has a can of bear spray handy! If you do spot any sort of fauna along the trail, be sure to admire them from a safe distance. Additionally, it is worth noting that the access route to the trailhead is subject to winter closure, and the Grand Teton National Park charges an entrance fee; refer to the NPS website for additional information.

Setting out from the Death Canyon Trailhead, the Phelps Lake Hike travels along the Death Canyon Trailhead Spur before diverting left onto the Valley Trail. Wander this lovely path through a corridor of lodgepole pines interspersed with aspens and outcroppings. This route will gently climb through the woodlands before opening to the Phelps Lake Overlook. Admire the scene of the shimmering glacial lake and the Jackson Hole from here, then begin your descent down to the lakeshore.

Descending via switchbacks, the Valley Trail will ultimately reach an intersection with the Phelps Lake Loop Trail. Turn left onto this route, and you will be led to Phelps Lake Beach. Revel in the beauty of the crystalline lake and the bounding Teton Mountains from the shoreline. Dip your tired feet in the chilly waters and rehydrate before beginning your climb back up to the overlook. To get back to the trailhead, simply retrace your footing along the path.
