Route Description for West Highland Way 5: Tyndrum To Inverarnan

The West Highland Way 5: Tyndrum To Inverarnan walk is a great option for those seeking a relatively easy section of the West Highland Way, requiring no technical walking. The section unfolds on an excellent trail along the floor of Glen Orchy, leading to a brief climb over a low-lying ridge. Despite being a relatively easy walk, the trail is also generally dry, making for a hassle-free walk in a delightful setting.

From the north side of the A82, where the walk begins, continue past the Tyndrum Cemetery and enjoy the peaceful hum of villagers going about their day as you prepare to depart Tyndrum. Proceed uphill, reaching two bridges, which you’ll cross before heading through a stile, joining the path to Strath Fillan. Spot Beinn Odhar towering on your right and a little further on Beinn Dòrain.

Continue the path as it heads downhill, leading you through a “sheep creep” beneath the railway. At this point, you’ll make a right to head north on the trail that traces the West Highland railway for a time. Maintain a straight course, as if heading directly for Beinn Dòrain. Soon you’ll pass through another gate, setting you up to cross a stone bridge that arches over the Allt Kinglass River. Make a left here, going over another stile and passing a house. Enjoy this scenic section along the bottom of Beinn Dòrain before crossing the railway and spotting the Bridge of Orchy Hotel down on your left. Take a left at the crossroads of tracks, passing through another gate to head beneath the railway, then turn right to make your way to the road, which you’ll follow downhill and to the left. Reaching the main road, you’ll cross with care and pick up the minor road, which is opposite and runs just to the right of the Bridge of Orchy hotel. After crossing another bridge, veer slightly right on the road and make a left turn onto the signed footpath, which leads through another gate and onto the forest section. Pass through another gate and follow the path as it climbs and zig-zags up towards the moorland.

In time, the path levels off, and you’ll reach a distinct fork that features an optional detour to a cairn lookout point over Loch Tulla and the surrounding mountains. From the fork, continue on the path as it leads you to descend towards a road. Following the descent, you’ll reach the Inveroran Hotel, where the West Highland Way 5 walk completes. Wild camping is permitted nearby. Check permit zones for details if you’d like to pitch a tent following this walk.
