Route Description for First Forest Point Hike
The First Forest hike leads you through an area that was originally called the First Forest because it was the first large accumulation of petrified wood reached when traveling from Adamana. This hike shows you the numerous petrified logs eroded from the Jasper Forest bed. There used to be a road through this area, but now the forest can be seen from the overlook and by hiking this rugged path.
This route isn’t well-marked, and it can be easy to get off the trail. We definitely recommend bringing a downloaded GPS route to help you navigate. The second half of the trail is definitely harder to follow than the first half, but the first half is more impressive, so no worries if you turn back early because of the trail condition..
The impressive wealth of petrified wood on this trail requires a reminder: removing any amount of petrified wood from the park is considered theft. Leave each and every piece of the park where you find it for future hikers to enjoy.
From the trailhead at the overlook, the route heads south before turning west. It continues mostly straight on before curving up to your right, where it terminates at a rocky outcropping. From here, retrace your steps to the trailhead.
