Route Description for Shaw Butte via Shaw Butte Trailhead
Shaw Butte via Shaw Butte Trailhead is the most direct route up Shaw Butte in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. The viewpoint atop Shaw Butte offers an excellent view of nearby North Mountain. This hike is moderately difficult and it’s generally suitable for strong beginners and active families. There’s lots of parking at the trailhead but note that there aren’t any restrooms.
This hike is dog-friendly as long as your dogs are kept on leash. Remember to bring lots of water with you and consider wearing sun protection. Avoid hiking during the heat of the day if temperatures are forecast to be high.
From the trailhead, hike a few steps towards the base of the ridge. Go straight through the junction and begin climbing up the ridge. The trail is steep enough to feel like a light workout but not overly strenuous for most. You’ll crest the ridge that leads to the top of the butte and follow it up to the summit. Look out at North Mountain to the southeast, then retrace your steps back to the trailhead.
