Route Description for Voaz Loop
The Voaz Loop is a gorgeous hike that travels through the Phoenix Mountain Preserve to the base of Piestewa Peak. With amazing mountain views, tons of saguaros, and interesting rock formations to keep you entertained, you’ll hopefully feel like the steep sections of the trail were well worth the effort. This route should be alright for active families, but very small children may not be able to complete it.
As with all hikes in this area, make sure you bring plenty of water with you and turn back when your water is halfway gone. Consider sun protection and start your hike early in the morning or evening to avoid the heat of the afternoon.
From the trailhead, take the trail heading south. You'll climb up and over a small peak and then head for the foothills of Piestewa Peak. Bear right and then begin switchbacking up the short, steep ascent to the saddle. There are two more short sets of switchbacks to get you up to the saddle, then you’ll descend steeply down the other side. Bear left to return to the base of the loop and retrace your steps from this point back to the trailhead.
