Route Description for Lamar Valley Trail
The Lamar Valley Trail is an excellent route in Yellowstone National Park. This area is best known for its abundance of wildlife. When hiking, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for elk, pronghorn, bison and, of course, bears on the trail. If you do encounter wild animals, do not approach or feed them and be sure to admire them from a safe distance. Before you set out on your hike, make sure that everyone in your hiking party is familiar with bear safety protocols. At least one member of your group should carry bear spray and know how to use it properly.
Whether you hike the Lamar Valley trail in one day or break up your adventure over a couple of days, this route is one to remember. With incredible scenery, wandering wildlife, and beautiful wildflowers, the Lamar Valley Trail is as picturesque as it gets.
To hike the Lamar Valley Trail, begin at the Lamar River Valley trailhead, cross over the Lamar River and follow the path south for approximately 2.3 km to a divide. Stay left to continue southeast for 2.7 km to a second divide here; take the trail on your right to hike the last half mile to Cache Creek.
At Cache Creek, you can either turn around and head back to the trailhead or set up your tent at one of the nearby campsites for a peaceful night under the stars.

This trail begins at the Lamar River Valley Trailhead on the south side of Northeast Entrance Road, approximately 24.1 km east of Tower Junction.
