Itinerary for Cycling Austria’s Mur Cycle Path
Arrival in St. Michael im Lungau
After arriving in St Michael im Lungau, you will meet for a briefing and bike fitting, before enjoying free time for the day. It is recommended to take a cycling trip to the Spring of the River Mur (approximately 55km).
There is little traffic on the way along the River Mur to the national park town Muhr. You will cycle past colourful meadows to the car park Muritzen and continue uphill on a steep route to the Stickler alpine hut. The last part of the way, you will walk to the spring of the river Mur on 1898 metres in altitude (about one hour hike). Then, you will ride your bike downhill back to St. Michael.
Cycle to the Historic Town of Murau
On the first official day of cycling you will make your way to Tamsweg – a historic market place and home to the pilgrimage church of St. Leonhard. This region is characterized by wood in all its diversity (wood museum St. Ruprecht). Today’s destination is the tranquil town of Murau, a medieval beer brewing town with a beer museum, the castle Murau, and a beautiful centre.
Bike Through the Mur Valley
The passages of the Mur Valley at the foot of the Niedere Tauern lead you to Frojach with its narrow-gauge railway museum; to the legendary ruins in Frauenburg and to the oldest mineral water spring in Styria in Sauerbrunn. Many historic sites can also be seen in Judenburg: the city tower, the former sovereign’s castle, townhouses, and Magdalen Church.
Cycle Through Loeben to Bruck an der Mur
On the fourth day of the tour, you will visit Maria Buch (pilgrimage church) and the monastery Seckau (Benedictine abbey). In the old industrial towns, you can clearly see how successful the locals dealt with their past when visiting their architectural sites: Well-kept old towns, vibrant pedestrian zones, and interesting museums. In Leoben, you can visit the monastery Göss and the Gösser brewery. In Bruck an der Mur, you will find interesting sites such as the Schlossberg hill, the Kornmesserhaus, and the city hall.
Traverse the Austrian Countryside to Graz
Today you will cycle to Frohnleiten. All the while being exposed to the natural beauty of the countryside, including old farmhouses, orchards, and high cliffs. There will also be many landmarks along the route, such as Rabenstein castle, the Lurgrotte caves, and the open-air museum in Stübing. Styria's capital city, Graz, has lots of attractions as well, including the Schlossberg hill with its clock tower, Eggenberg castle, the country house and the town hall, countless museums, and great restaurants.
Visit Seggau Castle
On Day 6 of the tour, you will have the chance to visit Seggau Castle, where you can visit the Fürstenzimmer (sovereign’s room) and art gallery, in addition to enjoying some wine in the 300-year-old wine cellar. This will undoubtedly get you into the right mood for the South Styrian wine road, after which, you can visit the church, city hall, and ship mill in Mureck.
Cycle Mureck to Bad Radkersburg and End of Tour
The short final stage of the tour is characterized by water of all kinds. The River Mur will guide your way, you can swim in Lake Röcksee, visit the mineral water spring Peterquelle, or relax in the thermal waters of Bad Radkersburg. At the end of the day you will make your departure from the historic town of Bad Radkersburg, either individually or by way of a pre-arranged return transfer. You can also extend your trip if you would rather spend some more time in the area.
