Itinerary for Dolomites Chestnut Route Walking
Bressanone
Begin your journey in South Tyrol’s oldest city: the ever-so vibrant Bressanone. If you have time, go out and explore the rich culture dotting the city. Spend the evening relaxing and preparing for the trip ahead.
Walk to Velturno
After enjoying a delicious breakfast, hop on a bus and travel to Novacella Abbey, which is known for its memorable white wine. Commence your pilgrimage. Follow countryside paths through vineyards and wind through woods before reaching Velturno. Admire the chestnut trees encircling this town, evoking cozy, breezy vibes. Spend the night at a comfortable hotel.
Walk to Barbiano
Get ready for another day of hiking through Italy’s magnificent haven of nature. Expect vibrancy to dot your 16 km trek. Encounter the Sabiona monastery standing tall and overlooking a steep cliff drop. Keep trekking until you reach the folksy hub for artists: Chiusa. Continue until you encounter Barbiano, a pleasant village etched along River Isarco.
Hike to Collalbo
Munch on breakfast before tying up your laces and hiking through pockets of woods and orchards embroidering the landscapes. Come across the ultimate mecca for outdoor enthusiasts: Renon plateau. Take a short detour to a prehistoric rock. Reach Collalbo, kick off your shoes, and relax.
Collalbo Loop
After breakfast, enjoy a relatively easy 11 km loop that will have you winding through forest groves, Alpine meadows blanketing the land, and along Kematen Lake. Admire the pyramids, built by moraine silt, before heading back to Collalbo by train. Be sure to admire the stunning views rolling by outside the train window.
Hike to Bolzano
Get ready for a long but pleasant day meandering Italy’s countryside, where castles and farms provide entertaining viewpoints as you walk. After trekking for 18 km, reach Castel Roncolo, a medieval wonder standing in front of a steep grassy slope. Take a bus from here to Bolzano, where Austrian and Italian cultures collide to form one lively, cheerful city.
Alp of Siusi loop
Munch on breakfast before heading to Compatsch by bus, and then cable car. Embark on a stunning loop, passing by quaint huts and villages dotting the hills, while the Dolomites jet out of the ground and tower in the background. Follow the loop back to Compatsch and ride back to the bus in a cable car. Head back to Bolzano for the evening.
Depart Bolzano
The tour ends after breakfast.
