Night 1
Hotel in Osterode
This historic walled city has a scenic market square, churches, and beautifully-preserved classic timber-frame houses.
Hike the Harz Witches Trail to the peak of Brocken Mountain
Embark on an 8-day hiking adventure across the entire length of the Witches Trail, one of the most famous hiking routes in Germany. The Complete Witches Trail Hiking Tour takes you on a journey of more than 100km over scenic footpaths through the lush valleys, rivers, and gorges of the Harz Mountains.
You'll summit Brocken Mountain, the highest peak in the Harz Mountains, and marvel at natural wonders like Könighshütter Waterfall and Bode Gorge. Following ancient trade routes connecting tiny medieval villages, each night you'll stay in quaint small towns tucked away from the outside world. Challenge yourself to see all of the beauty and history of the Witches Trail!
After arriving in Osterode, be sure to explore the lovely sights of this historic walled city. In the old town area you can admire the market square, churches, and the beautifully-preserved classic timber-frame houses.
Today you’ll head to the starting point of the Witches Trail and begin hiking. The uphill route takes you to Oberharzer Wasserregal, a waterworks system that dates back to the 16th century.
End today's section at Clausthal-Zellerfeld, home to the impressive Marktkirche zum Heiligen Geist, which is Germany's largest church.
Following the idyllic forest paths and narrow trails as you head towards Altenau, passing springs and dykes along the way.
Once at Altenau you can visit Krauter Park, Germany's biggest herb garden.
Following in the footsteps of German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe today, take the Goethe Trail to the top of Brocken Mountain. As the tallest peak in the Harz Mountains, you'll get fabulous views from the summit. Getting back down is also a treat as you ride the steam-powered Harz Narrow-Guage Railway to Schierke.
Climbing along Trundstein Mountain, today's hike takes you past the beautiful Königshütte waterfall and follows the Bode River with its active limestone quarries.
Once in Rübeland, it's worth visiting the Baumann Cave, a limestone grotto with impressive stalactites and stalagmites.
Passing through mining areas and quarries, admire the natural stone features this path is known for. Walking along the Bode River, you'll pass the dam in Wendefurth and reach your overnight location in Treseburg.
The last section of the Witches Trail leads you down into the vast Bode Gorge (Bodetal), often called Germany's Grand Canyon thanks to its steep granite walls and lush valleys.
Overnight in Thale, taking some time to check out the interesting statues of the Fairy Ring and perhaps taking the chair lift to Rosstrappe 2 to see the amazing views.
Congratulations on completing the entire Witches Trail! But if you're not ready for this adventure to end, we recommend adding on an additional night or two in nearby Quedlinburg, a UNESCO World Heritage City recognized for its beautifully-preserved architecture.

I’ve been using 10Adventures route guides for a while, but had never booked a tour. My wife and I booked a self-guided hike in Greece and were so impressed with how we were able navigate the route without a guide with the detailed and easy to follow itinerary. We enjoy travelling independently, and 10Adventures made that happen.

I’ve adventured around a lot of Canada and the US, but I’ve always wanted to explore other parts of the world. I felt a bit scared before booking my trip to Israel, but my conversations with the team at 10Adventures helped ease any worry. I can’t wait to explore more of the world!

Travel companies have had to go through a lot during the pandemic but 10Adventures were super flexible and accommodating nonetheless. I had to cancel my tour in France due to the pandemic. 10Adventures was great and let me reschedule for a later date!

Whenever I’m looking for my next adventure 10Adventures never fails. Their routes all over England are my main go to for exploring and I have only had great experiences booking both guided and self-guided trips in Europe and South America with them. I am looking into Africa next.

I just got back from backpacking in the Sierra Nevada, and WOW. What an unreal journey! The alpine meadows, waterfalls, and the lakeside camping spot were memorable highlights! I wonder what other tours 10Adventures has to offer. That one went so well that I am now convinced I need to book another!

I'm not a big fan of traveling because of my fear of flying, but my girlfriend convinced me to go on the Aurora Borealis Tour in the Yukon. I will never forget the mesmerizing northern lights. Such a romantic (and cold) getaway. I would highly recommend it.
