Cruise the Orang Utan River Tour Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive and Set Sail

Your river adventure begins today as you arrive at Palangkaraya Airport and transfer to the harbour to start your journey. Cruise past the stilted and floating houses of the provincial capital and continue along the forested river passing small villages. In the early evening, take a canoe on the shimmering black water lake and make a short stop and stroll around Kalaweit Island. Keep an eye out for probosci's monkeys, hornbills, and Brahmini kites. Return to the Rahai’i Pangun to enjoy a quiet dinner in the midst of the forest.

Day 2 Cruise to Bapallas Island, Kanarakan, and Tahai

The Rahai’i Pangun moves upstream this morning along the Rungan River while you enjoy a delicious breakfast. On arrival at Bapallas Island, you’ll take the motorized canoe to observe orangutans as you hope to catch your first sighting of these magnificent creatures. Learn about the BOSF pre-release program as you watch orangutans in their natural habitat.

Leisurely lunch onboard while cruising to Kanarakan, a tiny riverside village on the Rungan River, passing Kaja pre-release orangutan island along the route. Arriving in the village in the afternoon, village elders from the Dayak Ngaju tribe will perform a welcoming ceremony before leading you on a stroll around the village. Joined by a local host, you’ll take in the village home gardens, a rubber field & rubber tapping demonstration, and other village activities. Visit the village elder’s house and enjoy a traditional spiced coffee or herbal tea. Back on board, finish the day with a relaxing cruise to Lake Tahai.

Day 3 Lake Tahai and the Village of Sei Gohong

This morning, enjoy an optional canoe at dawn on Lake Tahai to spot abundant birdlife. Then, savour a leisurely breakfast on board. Later, visit the village of Sei Gohong to meet the traditional medicine expert and enjoy a short walk to the nearby forest to find several plants that are used as traditional medications by the Ngajus. Back at the village, you’ll discover a larger collection of these traditional medicines and discuss their functions with the locals. Back to the boat, it’s time to cruise downstream to Muara Rungan, passing Bapallas Island for more orangutan sightings.
