Explore the beautiful Mediterranean peninsula of Istria on this 8-day self-guided hiking tour. Find yourself in three different countries as you hike from coastal fishing villages in Italy into the hilltop towns in the hills of Croatia.
This walking adventure shows off the diverse landscapes of the Istria peninsula. You’ll hike along the sunny coast that belongs to Italy and Slovenia and then turn inland for walks through the hills, valleys, and vineyards in Croatia. You’ll soak in the culture as you experience the sights and sounds of charming overnight stops along your route. This hiking tour is the perfect way to escape the hustle and bustle of busier tourist destination and enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine. Get three countries off your bucket list in one go!
After you’ve checked into your Trieste hotel you’ll have the whole day to explore this beautiful port city. It has a fascinating history and unique personality for you to discover.
You’ll need to take public transportation to reach your starting point today. Follow an old railway through lovely forests to the quaint hamlet of Pesek. Along your way keep your eyes open to spot ruins of prehistoric settlements!
Kick back and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this little settlement, worlds away from the daily hustle.
Continue your hike today through the Val Rosandra. There will be interesting caves and an ancient Roman aqueduct along you can stop into on your way to the village of Bagnoli della Rosandra.
When you arrive at Aquilina you’ll take public transit to reach your final destination in the charming fishing town of Muggia.
Shortly after you begin your hike today you’ll cross into Slovenia. Your route includes tranquil forests and lovely views of the Mediterranean. A bus will take you to the village of Koper, also known as Capodistiria. Spend the rest of the afternoon exploring this beautiful car-free village.
This morning you’ll leave Koper by taking a beautiful seaside route that leads to another fishing town, Izola. You’ll finish your walk in Piran, a beautiful city with Venetian influence.
Your afternoon is free for you to stroll the streets to admire the Venetian palaces and soak in the vibrant atmosphere.
A transfer will drop you off in Groznjan, which is known for its world-class music scene. Your hike moves inland and travels towards Livade on your way to Motovun. Spend the rest of your afternoon exploring this beautiful Croatian hilltop town.
The final leg of your journey is to Porec. On your way, it's worth stopping at the Euphrasian Basilica, a UNESCO World Heritage site. A transfer will take you from Vizinada the rest of the way to Porec. Celebrate your arrival in Porec with a glass of local wine in the historic centre of town.
Your tour is completed after breakfast. Begin your journey home, or extend your stay to spend more time in historic Porec.
This self-guided walking tour of Istria is run as a custom tour and the price depends on the time of year in which you choose to travel and how many people will be in each room.
The best time to travel to Istria for this tour is the less busy spring or early fall (April-June or September) when the weather is warm and pleasant. If you prefer to be able to swim in hot weather and you’re okay with heavier crowds, try travelling in July or August. Note that there are no departures available between July 17th and 27th, 2021.

Transportation for you and your luggage is included throughout the tour, including bus tickets on day 2 and day 3. Your luggage will be transported between hotels during your hikes. Airport transfers are not included but may be added as a supplement.

No. You will be provided with all necessary information to complete your self-guided tour. Self-guided tours offer great flexibility in your day-to-day, but you should be comfortable with more independence than you’d have on a guided tour.

This tour ends in Porec, Croatia. The nearest airport is Trieste Friuli Venezia Giulia Airport (TRS). There is regular bus service between Porec and Trieste, as well as a weekly shuttle that runs on Saturdays that can be booked in advance.
