Itinerary for La Gomera Walking Tour
Arrive in La Gomera
Your tour begins with a pick-up from the airport and ferry from Los Cristianos on the island of Tenerife to your start point in San Sebastián on the island of La Gomera. Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins during the ferry ride!
Get settled into your accommodations before setting out to explore this seaside capital of La Gomera, where pastel-coloured buildings line streets dotted with shops, cafes, and restaurants.
You’ll undoubtedly have learnt about San Sebastián’s main claim to fame fairly quickly upon arrival, as it is well documented throughout the town that Christopher Columbus stayed in San Sebastián while on his way to the New World!
Discover Garajonay National Park
A short private transfer this morning will take you from San Sebastián to the beautiful Hermigua Valley. Known for its terraced plots and cedar forests, the valley will serve as the gateway today to the “green heart” of La Gomera—Garajonay National Park.
Navigating the rainforest landscape, you’ll walk among the dense laurel woods and their weaving trunks. Continuing a path up towards the sky, you’ll reach a spectacular viewpoint with breathtaking views of the surrounding islands and Spain’s highest mountain, El Tiede.
A final descent to Chipude concludes today’s walk.
Walk Beautiful Barrancos and Las Hayas
This morning you'll make your way through two stunning barrancos (valleys), passing through the artistic village of El Cercado, well-known for its unique pottery. Terraced plots and picturesque palm groves line the path as you enter the Barranco de Valle Gran Rey, known as the prettiest valley on the whole island.
Having worked up a healthy appetite, you'll enjoy a lunch of local specialties in a traditional restaurant in the idyllic mountain village of Las Hayas. With a satisfied palate, you'll then make a final descent among junipers, heather, and palm trees into the Valley of Los Loros, where you'll find tonight's accommodations.
Walk the Vallerhermoso Circuit
Today you’ll witness the varied landscape of the island as you exit the valley of Los Loros and make your way onto drier terrain.
The path will take you on a gradual ascent leading to the hilltop chapel of Santa Clara, perched on a ridge. The chapel itself is beautiful, with whitewashed walls that contrast beautifully with the surrounding blue of the sea that crashes 700 m below. Take in panoramic views of the surrounding mountaintops before taking the steep path down to a tiny cove nestled on the coast. Continue the path back to the village of Vallehermoso.
Enjoy an evening exploring this beautiful town, perhaps checking out the Roque Cano, Vallehermoso’s natural monument that rises from the hillside, or strolling the black sandy shores of Playa de Vallehermoso.
Walk from Vallerhermoso to Hermigua via Garajonay National Park
Departing the valley this morning, you’ll make your way through Las Rosas before reaching the visitors’ center at Garajonay National Park.
An exhilarating descent into the Barranco de Argoto is up next before you ascend to a spectacular viewpoint at Chorrillo. 800m (2624 ft) below sprawls the beautiful Hermigua Valley, sure to take your breath away.
Continue along this scenic path before making your final descent to Hermigua.
Views of El Tiede Mountain
A short, steep ascent will lead you into a fruit-producing agricultural region boasting several charming banana groves.
As is customary on this island of ever-morphing landscapes, the terrain changes abruptly as you cross a wide path surrounded by sparse vegetation and several barren barrancos on your way to the sea.
Admire the succulents and cacti that make this landscape unique as you head for the coast and enjoy spectacular views of Tenerife and the El Tiede Mountain.
Explore Anaga Natural Park
Today there are two choices of walking routes.
Option 1: 16 km route
Setting out towards a spectacular viewpoint at Degollada de Peraza, you'll then make your way through the scenic landscapes of the island's southeast coast. The path is well maintained and waymarked, but walkers will traverse high terrain on this route. Continuing the trail, you'll stop at a beautiful beach and enjoy a refreshing dip as your route comes to an end.
Option 2: 10 km route
Setting out from Las Casetas, you'll embark on a brief ascent before making your way downhill on steep coastal terrain. While walking, you'll enjoy breathtaking views of the sea, Tenerife, and El Tiede mountain in the distance.
Departure
This morning following breakfast, take the ferry back to the island of Tenerife to depart from the airport. Safe travels!
