Outdoor Rock Climbing Level 1 & 2 in Canadian Rockies Itinerary

Day 1 Meet in Canmore and Basic Intro

Your rock climbing adventure in the Canadian Rockies begins in Canmore. You’ll jump right in with an intro followed by gear issuing and a lesson on the basics of rock movement. Learn about the top rope climbing system, practice belaying, and go over rope care and management.

You’ll start climbing routes this afternoon to put what you’ve learned into practice.

Day 2 Local Climbing

Today is a full-on immersion in climbing. You’ll go over crag hazard evaluation, use guidebooks to interpret topos, practice movement skills through bouldering, consolidate your top roping skills, learn about anchor construction, practice rappelling, and have lots of time to just climb.

Day 3 Multi-Pitch Climbing

Head out to try your hand at a multi-pitch climb in Canmore, Banff, or Lake Louise. You’ll be put on a route suitable for your skill level and spend the day working on a challenging (just challenging enough!) objective.

Day 4 Local Climbing Day

Today you’ll refine your leading and clipping techniques, practice simulated or real leads, continue with anchor cleaning, and progress in your movement development.

Day 5 Final Day of Climbing

By today you’ll be learning about managing high first bolts, continuing with anchor cleaning, and refining your technique.

Outdoor Rock Climbing Level 1 & 2 in Canadian Rockies Price and Dates

This guided skills training course is run as a fixed-departure tour where you’d be joining a group, however, custom private tours can be organized for those willing to travel with their group only (please contact us with your preferred date and the number of people in your group and we will create the itinerary just for you). Please note that due to very high demand and limited availability in campgrounds it is necessary to plan your trip a long time in advance.

Accommodation in Canmore

Accommodation on this tour is not included. A variety of accommodation options exist in both Canmore, Calgary and Banff, including campsites, hostels, all levels of hotels as well as condo-style accommodation with kitchens or suites. We recommend that you book your own pre and post-trip accommodations well in advance as all levels of accommodations in the Bow Valley fill quickly.

What do I need to bring?

You will be provided with rock shoes and climbing equipment, but you are also free to bring your own gear if you have it. Otherwise, please bring:

  • Lunch, snacks and plenty to drink
  • Daypack (large enough for spare clothing, your lunch and personal and group climbing gear)
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunblock
  • Rain gear
  • Clothing allowing for easy and complete range of movement
  • Warm weather gear (fleece jacket, long johns, warm hat, gloves etc.)
  • Hiking boots or running shoes for the hike to the climbing area.
