We strongly recommend to ensure that routine immunizations such as tetanus and diphtheria are up to date and to consider Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccinations. Please ask your doctor for advice.
Does this trek in Ecuador go to high altitude?
Yes, this trek in Ecuador is at high altitude, however your sleep at relatively low altitude, with all but one night below 3,000m (10,500'). Unlike trekking in other high-altitude places like Nepal or other parts of the Andes, you trek high, but get to sleep low each night. This formula of trek high/sleep low, is beneficial to the body and reduces the impacts of being at high altitude. It is still tougher to trek at high altitude than at low altitude, so although some days look easy, they will be tough!
I'm concerned about the elevation on this trekking tour.
While it's true that this trekking tour gets to some high elevation, it has been designed to allow you to sleep at a lower elevation each night, in fact only one night is over 3,000m. In addition, your first day in Quito has you taking a cable car to high elevation, which should allow you to acclimatize without too much effort. All of this doesn't mean that the hiking gets any easier each day, but it does mean that you sleep at a reasonable elevation at night. All guests should talk to their doctors about the trip, as there are some medications that can help with altitude.
