Planning your Hiking trip to Australia in 2026

Where to hike

Australia’s great walks fall into three very different regions. Tasmania holds the classics: the alpine Overland Track from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair, the remote South Coast Track, and the granite peaks of Flinders Island. In the Red Centre, the Larapinta Trail runs for 223 km along the desert ridgelines of the West MacDonnell Ranges out of Alice Springs. Up in the tropical Top End, the Jatbula Trail follows the Arnhem Land escarpment past waterfalls and rock art, with World Heritage Kakadu nearby. They are the highlights of Guided Australia tours, part of the wider Guided Oceania tours.

Choosing your trek

The walks range from moderate to very demanding. The Classic Larapinta and Kakadu sit at the gentler end, the Overland Track and Jatbula in the middle, and the full 223 km Larapinta and Tasmania’s South Coast Track at the serious end, for fit and experienced walkers. Trips run from six days up to a fortnight, so there is a fit for a first big trek as well as for seasoned hikers chasing a wilderness challenge.

What to expect

These are fully supported treks: you walk with expert guides who handle the route, the camps or huts, the meals and the transfers, and on several trips you carry only a day pack while the rest is moved or set up for you. Expect long days on foot over real wilderness ground, far from towns, with the reward of empty trails and Australia’s strange and wonderful wildlife, from wombats and wallabies to the birds of Kakadu.

When to go

Timing depends entirely on the region, because they sit in opposite climates. Tasmania’s alpine walks are best in the southern summer, roughly December to March. The Red Centre and the Top End are walked in the cooler dry season, around April to September, when the desert and tropics are comfortable and safe; their summers are far too hot. There is good walking somewhere in Australia in almost any month.

FAQ for Australia Hiking Tours

Where are the best hikes in Australia?

They cluster in three regions: Tasmania, for the Overland Track and the South Coast Track; the Red Centre, for the Larapinta Trail; and the Top End, for the Jatbula Trail and Kakadu.

When is the best time to hike?

It depends on the region, and they run on opposite seasons. Tasmania is best in the southern summer, December to March; the Red Centre and the Top End are walked in the cooler dry months, roughly April to September.

How hard are the treks?

From moderate to very hard. The Classic Larapinta and Kakadu are the most approachable; the full Larapinta and Tasmania’s South Coast Track are long, remote and demanding. All involve full days on foot over several days.

Are the tours guided or self-guided?

All guided and fully supported: expert guides, set camps or huts, meals and transfers included.

Do I have to carry a full pack?

It varies. Several trips, such as the Classic Larapinta, are fully supported so you walk with just a day pack; others, like the South Coast Track, are full-pack wilderness walks where you carry everything.

Will I see wildlife?

Very likely. Depending on the region you may see wombats, wallabies, echidnas and quolls, the rich birdlife of Kakadu’s wetlands, and on the South Coast the rare orange-bellied parrot.

How fit do I need to be?

A good level of fitness. These are real multi-day wilderness walks with long days and rough ground; the harder treks also ask for some previous multi-day experience, while the gentler ones suit a fit first-timer.

How do I get there?

Fly into the regional gateways: Hobart or Launceston for the Tasmanian walks, Alice Springs for the Larapinta, and Darwin or Katherine for the Top End trails and Kakadu.
