Table of contents

The Creag Dhubh Walk is a great intermediate length walking route in Cairngorms National Park that offers views of Loch an Eilein and the surrounding Cairngorms landscape. While out walking the trail, you will make your way through the forest to visit the shores of the lake, before climbing up the mountainside to the summit of Creag Dhubh for spectacular views of the park. As with any route in Cairngorms National Park, views will likely be limited if you end up walking in misty weather.

Route Description for Creag Dhubh Walk

Featuring a less-travelled route that will lead you up to a popular summit, the Creag Dhubh Walk is certainly a bit more on the rugged side; however, the breathtaking views overlooking Loch an Eilein and the surrounding mountains are hard to beat… if you are able to catch them in good weather!

Setting out from the trailhead at the Loch an Eilein car park, you will make your way to the southwest around the beautiful shores of Loch an Eilein, eventually passing in between it and Lake Gamhna to continue through the forest. Once you have reached the Jack Drake Bothy, you will make a sharp left along the trail to begin the uphill portion of the walk.

Here, you will continue through the forest for a short distance, as you climb up the steep mountainside and eventually break free of the tree cover. After arriving at the summit of Creag Dhubh, you will enjoy sweeping views across Cairngorms National Park, so long as the weather permits. Once you have taken in the views, head back downhill and follow the same route back to the trailhead.
