The Little Bear to Sunset Loop leads you around a mesa near some of the most visible mountains in Flagstaff’s skyline, including Little Elden Mountain, Elden Mountain, and T-V Hill. Expect light traffic on this route.

Route Description for Little Bear to Sunset Loop

The Little Bear to Sunset Loop is a great multi-use trail in the Flagstaff area. This is a beautiful route with mountain views, but thankfully, it sees fewer users than many other routes nearby. The hike climbs up the mesa north of Little Elden Mountain, T-V Hill, and Elden Mountain for a lesser-seen view of these peaks.

Little Bear to Sunset Loop is shared by hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers. Remember to share the trail and look out for one another. Dogs are allowed off-leash on this trail, but we recommend keeping them close as bikes whiz past. Part of this area is recovering from a wildfire. Hiking through areas recovering from fire is always interesting, as the foliage will change each year. Flowers tend to thrive before the trees regrow, and different species of trees can thrive as the entire forest recuperates.

From the trailhead, take Arizona Trail-Little Elden away from the Schultz Tank. You’ll follow this route as it runs alongside the slope, then follow it as it turns to switchback up the mountainside. In the saddle, go right to climb up to the top of this slope. You’ll then follow Sunset Trail back to the tank and the trailhead.
