Castle Howard Walk

The Castle Howard Walk is a fantastic adventure in the Howardian Hills AONB of North Yorkshire that will lead you around the grounds of an extravagant country house. While out on the trail, you will walk around the stunning Castle Howard that has been the home of the Howard family for 300 years, before looping around the grounds to visit several other buildings on-site. This is a great trail that is suitable for lovers of history and nature.

Route Description for Castle Howard Walk
If you enjoy leisurely walks through grand estates with stunning views of historical architecture and the surrounding countryside, then you will be sure to enjoy the Castle Howard Walk. As this is an actual residence, be sure to respect the operating times of 10am to 6pm.
Setting out from the roadside car park, you will make your way east along the road for a short distance, before turning to the southeast along the shores of the Great Lake. Skirting around the edge of a large wood, you will continue on to the south and take in the stunning views of the Castle Howard grounds, eventually looping around to the southeast.
Here, you will head through a small stretch of forest and relax in the woodland setting, before breaking free of the tree cover and continuing on to the northwest. Here, you will be able to spot the mausoleum on your left as you cross over Lowdy Hill Gill. Keep on to the northwest and enjoy the scenic views of the estate, as you cross over Mill Hills Beck and pass by the large forest from the beginning of the walk. Here, you can simply retrace your steps along the trail to return to the car park where you began.

The trailhead for the Castle Howard Walk can be found at the roadside car park located just to the west of the Castle Howard Lakeside Holiday Park.
