Route Description for Chilco Mountain Trail
There is nothing better than a workout with a view, right? The Chilco Mountain Trail is a beautiful hike up the forested slopes of the Coeur d’Alene mountain, boasting incredible overlooks of the panhandle’s mountainous region. This route is demanding, so pack plenty of water to stay hydrated. Mind your footing as you hike as there are roots and rocks obstructing the path. Note the road to the trailhead is subject to seasonal closure.
Setting out from the trailhead off Forest Service Road 385, the Chilco Mountain Trail tracks southwestwardly into the woodlands. Immediately following your departure from the trailhead, the incline will intensify, but the switchbacks help ease the intensity of the grade. Keep an eye out for wildlife and enjoy the sparse views of the encompassing mountains through the tree breaks.
After some hiking, you will summit a ridge; beyond this point, you will trek south up to the summit. From here, you will be rewarded with 360-degree panoramic views of the mountains and adorning lakes. Revel in the beauty of the dramatic landscape, then retrace your footing along the path, back down to the trailhead.
