The South Chilco Mountain Hike is a demanding adventure reserved for experienced hikers and intrepid explorers. Summit not one but two soaring crests in the Coeur d’Alene Mountains and indulge in breathtaking views of the Idaho Mountains. While challenging, the incredible scenery, including snow-melt streams and several small alpine lakes, is worth the sweat.
Route Description for South Chilco Mountain Hike
Those with a thirst for adrenaline will enjoy the South Chilco Mountain Hike. Whilst exploring the high country, you will be rewarded with spellbinding scenery that warrants countless photo opportunities—so don’t forget your camera. Note his route is not well signposted, so be sure to download the trail GPS prior to departure. Additionally, the technical terrain demands some energy, so bring plenty of water and snacks to stay fueled. As you climb, it is important to be mindful of wildlife and make sure you know what to do in the case of an encounter.
Setting out from the unmarked trailhead off Forest Service Road 385, you will be guided southwest into the woodlands and up several switchbacks along the northeastern slope of Chilco Mountain. Mind your footing on the rocky terrain, and you will ultimately reach the exposed summit of Chilco Mountain, which grants epic vistas of South Chilco Mountain in the west and the nearby Idaho Mountains. After enjoying the views, head back down to the slope, turning left at the junction. Using the trail GPS, you will be guided along the saddleback beneath the canopy of the evergreens.
After some hiking, you will ultimately reach the peak of South Chilco Mountain. Revel in the scenery and seclusion this impressive summit boasts. Marvel at the views of the Rathdrum Prairie and the sights of several lakes, including Coeur d’Alene, Hayden, Lower Twin, and Hauser. To get back to the trailhead, simply retrace your steps back to the trailhead.
