Black Combe Circular Walk

The Black Combe Circular Walk is a wonderful trek in the southwest corner of the Lake District that will see you climb uphill for some absolutely stunning views. While out on the trail, you will make your way up the rough and rugged terrain of Black Combe, where you will receive a sweeping sightline into the Lake District to the Northeast and the Irish Sea to the west. Chances are that you might get some bad weather on this walk, but if you catch it on a clear day, this difficult trail will certainly reward you.

Route Description for Black Combe Circular Walk

Walking the Black Combe Circular may be a bit of a challenging adventure, but the route’s breathtaking views that sweep across the dark waters of the Irish Sea and the rugged terrain of the Lake District make it a popular destination for many walkers. Setting out from the car park, the trail initially follows the road into the village of Whicham before climbing up the steep terrain of the hillside along Moorgill Beck. Reaching the summit of Black Combe, you will be able to gaze out in every direction at the stunning landscapes surrounding you - provided that the weather cooperates. After enjoying the views over the Lake District and Irish Sea, follow the trail north to descend the hillside before turning to the south on the return leg of the walk.

Getting to the Black Combe Circular Walk Trailhead

To reach the car park for the Black Combe Circular Walk from Millom, drive northwest on St. George’s Road/A5093 for 5.5 km and continue onto the A595. Follow this for 1.8 km and you will find the car park on the left.
