Humphrey Head Walk

The Humphrey Head Walk is a short, family-friendly adventure in Cumbria that will take you along the length of a small peninsula for some amazing views of the surrounding coastal terrain. While out on the trail, you will walk along the edge of the water and experience some beautiful scenery that includes the Irish Sea stretching out before you and a number of rugged peaks in the distance. This trail is well-maintained and easy to navigate, making it suitable for walkers of every skill level.

Route Description for Humphrey Head Walk
The Humphrey Head Walk is a short adventure that will take you along the edge of the water for some nice views of the coast. If you are looking to explore the rocky coastline, be sure to research tidal patterns in advance of your walk. Additionally, portions of this walk can be quite wet and boggy, so remember to wear water-resistant footwear.
While it may only be a quick 2.9 km walk, the views along this trail are a pleasant surprise for the effort involved. While out on the trail, you will walk past a charming stretch of forest before arriving at the edge of the water with views overlooking Morecambe Bay and the Irish Sea. This is a great walk for people of all ages and skill levels.
Setting out from the trailhead near the Humphrey Head Outdoor Education Centre, make your way south along the trail for 0.7 km, enjoying the views of the surrounding forest until you arrive at the edge of the water. From here, continue south along the open terrain of the peninsula until you arrive at its southernmost point.
Take some time to explore the rocky terrain along Humphrey Head and carefully walk the water’s edge if the tide is low. Here, you will have some wonderfully scenic coastal views that stretch out across the Morecambe Bay and the Irish Sea to the southwest.
After taking in the views, turn back along the trail and retrace your steps to the north for 1.4 km, where you will arrive back at the trailhead where you began the Humphrey Head Walk.
Insider Hints for Humphrey Head Walk
- Terrain can be a bit boggy near the edge of the water. Make sure to wear decent walking boots or waterproof footwear for this adventure.
- Nearby Lakeland Leisure Park is a great place to camp with views across the water.
Getting to the Humphrey Head Walk Trailhead
To reach the trailhead for the Humphrey Head Walk from Park Road Gardens in Grange Over Sands, head southwest on Park Road/B5277 for 3.4 km and turn left onto Wraysholme Lane. After 1.1 km, turn left on Holy Well Lane, following it for 0.8 km and turning left to stay on the same road. After 0.3 km, you will arrive at the trailhead.
