Walking the Rannerdale Loop is a fairly quick adventure in the Lake District that will lead you up to the summit of Rannerdale Knotts for some beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. While out on the trail, you will walk alongside the flowing waters of Rannerdale Beck and Squat Beck before looping around to traverse the rocky terrain of the fell for views overlooking the calm expanse of Crummock Water. This trail features a small amount of elevation gain, but the terrain is fairly easy and suitable for a wide range of skill levels.
Route Description for Rannerdale Loop Walk
The Rannerdale Loop is a fun walk that is suitable for walkers of almost every skill level, including families with children; however, there are a few steep portions of terrain that you will need to navigate, mainly on the descent of the hilltop. Be sure to wear proper walking footwear to secure the best footing on the uneven terrain. Additionally, the car park at the trailhead is relatively small, meaning you might have to arrive early to secure a spot.
Setting out from the car park, the trail heads to the northeast at the foot of the rugged peak until you arrive at the banks of Rannerdale Beck. After exploring the area around the stream, the trail turns to the southeast along Squat Beck, gradually gaining elevation up the hillside. Follow the trail through a series of junctions and make a sharp right to follow along the ridge to the northwest, eventually arriving at the summit of Rannerdale Knotts. Here, you will enjoy some breathtaking views of the surrounding fells and the peaceful surface of Crummock Water below before descending the hillside on the return leg of the walk to the car park where you began.
