The walk up Steel Fell from Thirlmere is a fantastic one-way journey that will take you from the southern tip of Thirlmere Lake across several rugged fells for stunning views across the Lake District. While out on this walk, you will traverse the summit viewpoints atop Steel Fell, Calf Crag, Sergeant Man, and Tarn Crag before descending the hillside towards the charming village of Grasmere. As this is a one-way walk, you will need to either arrange a pickup, retrace your steps along the trail, or take public transit back to your vehicle.
Route Description for Steel Fell from Thirlmere Walk
The Steel Fell from Thirlmere Trail is a popular route in the Lake DIstrict due to its picturesque scenery and rugged, yet not too difficult trail. While out on the walk, you will make your way to the southwest through the open terrain, climbing up the steep hillside to reach the top of Steel Fell. While enjoying the views of surrounding peaks, you will continue to the southwest to traverse the rugged summits of Calf Crag and Sergeant Man. From here, you will head to the east across the summit of Tarn Crag, where you will enjoy some beautiful views overlooking Easedale tarn. Make your way downhill to the valley floor to skirt around the foot of Helm Crag on the return leg of the walk to the end point in Grasmere.Getting to the Steel Fell from Thirlmere Walk Trailhead
To reach the Steel Fell from Thirlmere trailhead from Ambleside, drive north on Rydal Road/A591 for 3.5mi and take the second exit at the roundabout to continue on for another 3.8mi. Make a left here to arrive at the trailhead in 175ft. Parking can be found a further 0.3mi down the road.Route Information
