Route Description for Whiskey Creek Camp Trail

We are big fans of the Whiskey Creek Camp Trail, and once you tackle this trek, you will understand why. Hike high into the high country, revelling in the overwhelming panoramas of California’s dramatic landscape. As this route travels to high altitudes, it is important to acclimatize to the area’s elevation, especially if you are visiting from sea level. Additionally, we suggest heading out at dawn to summit before noon, mitigating the chances of getting caught in a nasty afternoon storm. Wear layers, and in the fall and winter months, strap on microspikes or snowshoes to enjoy the trail even after snowfall! Pack plenty of water and charge your camera—we’re going on an adventure.

Though tiring, the views along this trek are well worth the effort. Immerse yourself in the alpine terrain as you hike through the corridors and basin of the Sierra Nevada’s granite peaks. Hike up to the Five Lakes, which expose wonderful overlooks of the Alpine Meadows, before wandering down through mixed conifer to the charming ruins of the Whiskey Creek Camps. Ideal for those seeking an intermediate challenge, this day hike can be managed by older children and novice hikers alike. Accessible year-round, we enjoy this hike most in the spring when the snow-melt streams are surging– beating the summer crowds that flock to the area. No matter the time of year you venture this trail, the scenic wilderness will undoubtedly inspire you.

Embark on your adventure along the Whiskey Creek Camp Hike from the Five Lakes Trailhead. From here, follow the Five Lakes Trail west, up to several switchbacks along the southern flank of KT-22 Mountain. This route will weave between tree shade and exposed sections, warranting wonderful views. Mind your footing on the rocky granite terrain as you ascend the vertiginous route. Steeply climbing, the path will eventually deliver you to the Five Lakes. Explore the five crystalline lakes, bounded by towering pines and red firs. When you are ready, continue hiking the Five Lakes Trail southwest down along the Five Lakes Creek.

This segment of the route will guide you into the forestlands, adorned with granite outcrops, to an intersection. Keep right and track the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail down several switchbacks here. Take your time as you climb down the terrain, and you will soon encounter yet another junction. Veer left here, and you will be diverted onto the Whiskey Creek Trail. Venture the moss-lined route to the Whiskey Creek Cabins. Explore the grounds of the cabin ruins, and when you are ready, retrace your footing along the path, all the way back to the trailhead.
