Route Description for Lion Canyon Trail
Treat yourself to incredible views along the Lion Canyon Trail. This wonderful trail is suitable for the whole family, exhibiting the diversity of the area’s flora and fauna. Though the exposed canyon trail offers impeccable views of the Topatopa Mountains, it also warrants unbearably hot conditions in the summer months. Head out in the early morning to beat the heat and the crowds. If you choose to head out in the afternoon, be sure to wear SPF and pack plenty of water. Note the road to the trailhead is rough, so vehicles with high ground clearance and 4-wheel drive are recommended.
Setting out from the trailhead, the Lion Canyon Hike follows the Lion Canyon Trail sough through the craggy canyon adorned with a dense community of chaparral brush. As you hike along the meandering creek of Lion Creek, you will be lulled into a state of relaxation. Enjoy the soothing sounds and impressive views as you climb further into the wilderness.
You will ultimately reach an intersection, keep left here and hike up the East Fork Lion Trail to the East Fork Lion Camp. From here, backtrack to the intersection and merge onto the West Fork Lion Trail to the Camp and charming cascade. You have reached your turnaround point—head back the way you came to the trailhead.
