Route Description for Sand Dune Arch and Broken Arch Trail

The Sand Dune Arch and Broken Arch Trail is a short, out-and-back hike to two beautiful sandstone arches just off of Main Park Road in Arches National Park. Spoiler alert: Broken Arch is not actually broken; a crack-like fold through the top of the arch gives it its name, but (as of 2022), this arch still stands. The paths to these arches are hot and sandy, so bring good footwear and lots and lots of water. We recommend heading out on this trail early in the day to beat the afternoon heat. This hike can be a great way for the whole family to get out and explore the beauty and wonder that Arches National Park has to offer. As you hike along keep an eye out for desert wildlife along the trail as mule deer are often seen grazing along the trail early in the morning. Do not approach or feed the wildlife and give any critters you come across lots of personal space.

From the Sand Dune Arch Trailhead, follow the path northeast for about 122 m to the first divide. Take a right at the junction and follow the trail another 152 m to Sand Dune Arch itself. Enjoy your time exploring under and around this beautiful structure before heading back to the junction. At the junction, take the other path and follow the trail for 0.5 km to the next divide. Take a right here and hike the last quarter mile to Broken Arch.

Rest in the shade of Broken Arch before turning around and following the path back to the trailhead. If you are eager to keep exploring in the area; consider completing the Broken Arch loop before heading back home.
