Route Description for Colgate Licks Loop Hike
The Colgate Licks Loop Hike would make an excellent addition to your hiking itinerary, no matter your skill level or age. This beautiful route explores lush meadows and mixed forests of lodgepole pines and firs, boasting views of the beautiful Lochsa River along the way. Note that there are exposed segments of the trail, so make sure you wear SPF. Also, bring your camera and block out enough time to read the interpretive signs that line the path!
Your informative and impressively scenic adventure begins from the trailhead off US-12. You will find two paths off the parking lot—while you can complete the loop from either direction, we ventured clockwise. Turning left, the Colgate Licks Trail will wander west through a swathe of meadowlands before rerouting north into the woodlands. As you climb further into the wilderness, the traffic sounds will become more muffled, and your adventure will become more peaceful.
Taking the time to reach the information plaques along the way, the circuit will eventually leave the shade of the tree canopy, opening back into the meadowlands. From here, you will ultimately return to the trailhead, marking the end of your expedition.
