The Finch Lake Hike is a great introductory excursion to the Rocky Mountain National Park. Less trafficked than many other alpine lake adventures, this trail delivers epic vistas of the crystalline lake and the surrounding mountainous wilderness.

Route Description for Finch Lake Hike

Travel this stunning trail up to a shimmering alpine lake ringed by towering pines. The Finch Lake Hike will guide adventurers through vibrant aspen groves, past granite outcroppings and through the pine forests up to the lake. The gradual grade of the trail is perfect for novice hikers seeking to acclimate to strenuous Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) hikes. Wear sturdy footwear as you will be led across sections of rocky terrain up to the lake. It is also recommended to wear layers as insurance against inclement weather and windy conditions. Note the Finch Lake Hike requires visitors to purchase a park pass.

From the Finch Lake Trailhead, the Finch Lake Cutoff Trail tracks southeast up a rocky ridge. Once you summit the ridge, the path will divert west and guide you through aspen groves. Eventually, you will encounter an intersection, stay right here. Continue hiking this path alongside a babbling brook until you reach another junction. At this point, veer left, and you will be diverted onto the Finch Lake - Pear Lake Trail. Track along this route past granite outcroppings and beneath the sparse tree shaded of towering pines. As you hike, you will intersect with several alpine streams. Go over the footbridges and you will inevitably be delivered to Finch Lake.

From Finch Lake enjoy the crystal clear waters that sit in the foreground of the snow-capped peaks. Explore the shoreline and dip your tired feet into the chilly waters. When you are ready to return, simply retrace your steps along the path back to the trailhead.
